Tammy Evans has been making gourd masks for many years. She uses a variety of natural legal feathers: as well as making “feathers”. She uses Yucca leaves, date palm sticks, saguaro cactus ribs, stones, beads, copper, shell, horsehair, African porcupine quills, grape vines, clay and deer antlers as well as found treasures.
“Gourds are seemingly spiritual for me; the handling of an individual gourd will “speak” to me. There is no rhyme or reason why one face will be painted a certain way and another different or which will have feathers, another porcupine quills, they simply evolve and I follow their lead. They are like old friends.. no two are the same….lumps and bumps included!”
All gourds can be cleaned with a feather duster, no sprays. They are best if not placed in direct sunlight as embellishments etc. may fade.
